~ ABOUT US ~
The Glasford Baptist Church of Glasford, Illinois, was organized in 1877 with Rev. Jones acting pastor. The first building stood on a rock foundation brought from the creek banks nearby. The ground on which the church and parsonage stands was deeded without cost to "the trustees of the Glasford Baptist church and their successors in office" on January 9, 1878 by Sam A. and Sarah Glasford.
Then about 1890 the Church was closed for several years. During this time Loren Peppet a Methodist Evangelist held revivals meetings in this church.
On February 8, 1896, a meeting was held for reorganization. The church was remodeled somewhat at this time. The plaster was taken off and wainscot put on. In 1921 the long porch was taken off and one entrance was made in the center of the North side instead of two as before.
As years went by the rock foundation crumbled away causing an urgent need for repairs of some kind, but not until the fall of 1931 did plans materialize for remodeling. City water was installed. In the summer of 1932 dedication ceremonies were held for the newly remodeled building.
With the Lord's continued blessing, in 1960 a new educational building was completed. This added to the south side of the sanctuary - a building of 35' x 92' providing 8 classrooms, nursery, cloak room and rest rooms at an approximate cost of $43,000.
In 1970 a remodeling and improvement program began, being completed in three years. During this time a new roof was laid and the church building was covered with aluminum siding. A new pastor's study was added. Cathedral lighting was added. The sanctuary was completely carpeted and new cushioned pews were installed. A set of Pella folding partitions were installed into the church basement, making possible five class rooms. Rededication services were held on November 25, 1973.
The sanctuary pews were reupholstered and new carpet was laid down in 1994 along with emergency lighting installed throughout the building.
In 1997 a new Fellowship Hall building was started at an estimated cost of $160,000 dollars. That money mark was met and the job wasn't done, but thanks to God's blessings the extra $40,000 came in and it was finally completed in late 1999. Connected to the education building the new Fellowship Hall included a new kitchen, bathrooms, library, secretaries room, new pastor's study, and attic storage. Once completed, dedication ceremonies were held for the newly constructed addition. In 2004 the back parking lot was paved for the Fellowship Hall entrance.
Also in 2001 and 2002 the nursery room was overhauled in the education building and the church roof was redone.
As time passed, the concrete on the front steps of the sanctuary began to crumble. In fall 2004 a new covered entrance way was completed to serve as a safer and more welcoming front entrance.
To God be all the glory and praise for all of these fine accomplishments, for He has led us step by step as we have constantly sought his guidance. Not forgetting that we are more than a fine building, but as a fellowship we are an integral part of the greater body of Christ.
The fervent prayers of our founding fathers have mingled with the prayers of generations past and present, and we are humbly grateful to Him who is the head of the church for the blessings bestowed upon the Glasford Baptist Church of Glasford, Illinois, whose mission it is to win souls to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. |
